Milling Slabs with my Alaskan Chainsaw Mill

I finally made some time to get this Silver Maple log milled up into slabs. Before I can start milling, I need to make some changes to my chainsaw mill. Currently, my mill has a width of 24″. This is too small to handle the size of this log so I ordered the parts to convert my mill into a 48″ wide mill. This is a very simple process. I was able to remove one piece at a time and install the new longer bars. I didn’t even have to disassemble the mill to do it. With the new larger mill, I’m ready to add the chainsaw and begin cutting.

The saw I’m using is a Husqvarna 372XP. Its a 72cc saw. Previously, I had been running it with a 30″ bar, but this time around I’m using a 42″ bar. This size bar may be a little large for this powerhead, but its what I have to use at the moment. I’ll be looking for a good used powerhead in the future.

To begin the milling, I set up my EZ Rails to make a nice straight first cut on the log. Its very important to get the first cut straight as all of the cuts after that will reference off the first cut. EZ Rails aren’t the only way to get a nice straight first cut. You can use something like an aluminum ladder or even a piece of 2×6, as long as its nice and straight. As long as it can guide the saw in a straight line, you will be fine using whatever method works for you. After I got a cut all the way across the log, I removed the rails and kept milling the log. I milled most of the slabs 2 1/4″ thick. I wanted to make sure there is plenty of material left after they are dry and flattened.

Overall, I’m happy with the way the slabs turned out. I now have them all stacked and stickered to dry. I’ll continue to monitor them as they air dry. These slabs will make some great projects once they are ready. I am also planing to sell some of them so if you are interested in a slab of silver maple, let me know.

Thanks for stopping by.
