Making a Leather Cover for a Cast Iron Skillet Handle

Cooking with a cast iron pan is great, except for one thing. The handle can get extremely hot after a while. If you’ve ever grabbed a hot cast iron handle, you’ll know that it doesn’t feel very good. My goal is to create a leather cover that slips onto the handle and protects your hand from the heat.

I found a small piece of about 7oz leather that I’ll be using. Its quite thick for this project but I think it will provide a nice amount of insulation to the handle. I used some small strips of the same leather to mark out the width of the handle. Then I added 1/4″ on each side of my original measurement to assure that this cover fits loose enough to slip on and off easily. This measurement is my stitch line. I added an additional 1/8″ of material past the stitch line. That is my final width.

I cut the pieces out according to my measurements and used contact cement to glue them together. Then I sanded the sides smooth on the belt grinder, and marked out my stitch line with my dividers. From there I punched the holes and stitched it up. After beveling the edges and burnishing them smooth, I softened the leather with some warm water and fit it to the handle. Once it was dry I oiled it up with some Olive Oil to condition the leather.

All in all, this leather handle cover turned out awesome. It fits the pan handle really good, and slips on and off easily. I know this will get a lot of use in our kitchen. Check out the video below for the entire process. If you use cast iron, and want to try to make something from leather. This is a great project.

Have an awesome day!
