Making a Rolling Pin Sander

After making the PVC Storage Rack, I’ve had the round cutouts from the hole saw kicking around the shop. After looking at them for several days, I got inspired to make a rolling pin sander. Rolling pin sanders are used in guitar building to flatten and sand the curved sides of an instrument. They are made by several commercial manufacturers. While they look very nice, they come with a nice price tag as well. I’m pretty sure I can make my own.

I started out by gluing up several of these wooden discs to make the rolling pin. While that was drying, I used a slightly smaller hole saw to make some more discs that would become the handle. The 2 outer pieces got a recess drilled for some bearings that would allow the handle to spin freely from the main body. I made some 3D Printed inserts to reduce the size of the bearings to fit the 1/4″ shaft which I used to hold the whole assembly together. After some sanding, I gave the sander a couple coats of shellac to seal it up. Hopefully, this will allow the sandpaper to stick better, as well as come off better.

After a quick test run, the sander seems to work great. I had just a small vibration in the handle, which I think is due to the shaft being bent a little bit. It doesn’t seem to affect the actual sanding drum at all. I can’t wait to test this little creation out. There are lots of things out there on the market that we can duplicate in our own workshops. Its not only a fun challenge, but can be a great way to save some money as well. Thanks for stopping by.
