This project is somewhat related to the Floating Shelf project from last week. As I mentioned, we recently did some rearranging in my daughters room. Another item she now needs, is some sort of coat rack to hold jackets and things. My goal for this project is to make something very simple and functional that I can get Hayley involved in the building process. Its not so much about the complexity of the project but about getting her in the shop and helping with this build.

To build these little coat racks, I used a piece of Elm from my stash of boards. I cut it down into 2 pieces that were about the same size. Since one side of these is a live edge, I spent a few minutes shaping the freshly cut side to look a little more like the opposite live edge. This was just so the edge I cut down didn’t look too out of place. Then with a little assistance from Hayley, we measured out for the pegs and I drilled those holes. Next we glued in the shaker pegs and let the glue dry. After measuring and drilling the mounting holes, I sprayed on a couple coats of lacquer to finish it up. The coat racks are done and ready to hang in her room.

This project was super simple but I was able to have Hayley help me out with a few parts. I think the experience she gets, and the time spent together are way more important than the project. Although, she does now have some cool coat racks for her newly configured room.

If you make things, and have kids, I highly recommend getting them involved in using their hands to make things. Get them started young and it will stick with them forever.
