Fixed: Smoker Door Seal

I need to replace the rope seal on my small vertical smoker. The one that was on there pretty much fell right off. Thankfully, this is a quick and easy process. This same process will apply to wood stoves, pellet stoves, smokers or any other device that uses this type of rope seal. Here’s the process.

1. Remove the door if at all possible. This will allow you to lay it flat and have easier access to work on it.
2. Remove the old seal. You should be able to just pull it off. Use some pliers or whatever you need to if its stubborn.
3. Clean the surface. Scrape out all the old glue and residue from the original rope. You don’t want anything loose in the rope channel.
4. (Optional) Wipe down with Mineral Spirits and let dry before applying the new cement. I did this, just to make sure it was clean.
5. Knead the cement before opening. This helps prevent clumps.
6. Apply a bead of cement all the way around your door.
7. Lay the new seal in place around the door and trim to length. Scissors work pretty well.
8. Press the rope into the cement. Make sure you don’t miss any areas.
9. Let air dry for 1 hr, then reinstall the door. Put it through a heat cycle within the next 30 days to set the cement.
10. Enjoy your new seal.

Bam, that’s it. Make sure you get the correct size rope, as some applications use different sizes. Check out the video below.
