Barn Wood Jewelry Holder with Wire Inlay

My Daughter has a boat load of necklaces, bracelets, hair accessories, and other items that tend to get tangled up into a mess. She needs something she can hang these items on so they stay somewhat organized. She has a jewelry box and that option doesn’t really work so well. I think some kind of hanger system will work well for her.

I chose a couple pieces of barn wood to make this hanger. Since the pieces I have aren’t wide enough, I glued up a couple narrower pieces to make my wider piece. I chose the best 2 faces for the front. When the glue was dry, I sent the panel through the drum sander to clean up the back so it would hang flush on the wall. The only problem with this was that I wasn’t paying attention and actually sanded the front face off. There went my nice barn wood top. Oh well, I’ll just do something with a stain later on.

With the piece sanded, I used an edge guide on my router to cut a dado for a small shelf. A couple passes, and I was able to sneak up on the fit. Now it was time to mix up some epoxy and fill some cracks in these boards. I added some blue pigment to the Total Boat epoxy and drizzled the epoxy into the cracks. After sanding it flush, I moved on to the wire inlay.

I ordered some .014″ flat brass wire for this inlay. After some experimenting, I decided I would make my own wire inlay tools from some old allen wrenches. This wasn’t really that hard. I used my belt grinder to cut a bevel on the end of the allen wrench then epoxied them into some dowels. Now following my paper template, I slowly  cut the channel in the piece that would accept the wire. To insert the wire, I just tapped it into place and secured it with some CA glue. Now I can glue in the shelf.

Now all thats left to do is a little sanding, applying a couple coats of walnut danish oil and laying out for, and installing the 35 cup hooks. Bam! This project is complete. I really hope this helps my Daughter keep her things a little more organized. Check out the project video.
