Make a Center Finder

One of the tasks that comes up in many projects, is finding the center of a piece. This can be done by accurately measuring from each side, or using a center finding ruler. Another way that is faster is to use a homemade center finder. Its quick to make, and once you use one, you will find tons of different ways to use it, and will likely make several different versions. Lets make one.
The dimensions for this project aren’t really critical. Its a piece of wood with 2 dowels, and a center hole. The dimensions between the dowels are the only critical measurement as they will determine the center point. You can make the outer shape any size or shape you’d like. I have included a simple drawing you can use to get started. You can make one just like mine or modify it to fit your needs.
The construction is simple. Drill the holes for the dowels, and the center point first. Make sure they are evenly spaced and as accurate as you can make them. Then shape the outside, glue in the dowels and start marking the centers of things. It doesn’t take very long to make one of these. See how many different versions you can come up with based on this concept. Have fun with it.
