Today is another step forward for the acoustic guitar. This time, I’m focusing on getting the logo inlay installed on the headstock.

I chose to create an inlay for me headstock logo. Its a simple oval shape that will be surrounded by a thin strip of padauk. As you may have guessed, I made my templates on my 3D Printer. I have my entire headstock modeled in Fusion 360 so it was very easy to create my templates. I attached one of the templates to the headstock to rout the recess for the oval inlay. From there I needed to create the actual oval inlay. This was made by using my branding iron to burn the Hayley Guitars logo onto a piece of lightly flamed maple. I cut that out and used the oval template to route the oval to its final shape. Since this oval is quite small, I created a simple jig from some scrap wood to hold the oval securely and keep my fingers far away from the router bit.

With the oval cut to size it was time to get it installed. Since the inlay was to be wrapped in thin padauk, I first needed to bend the tiny strip to the oval shape. I had to get creative and converted my branding iron into a makeshift bending iron. After a little careful bending I was able to get the padauk bent into shape without breaking it. The installation was easy from there. I carefully worked it into place and secured the inlay with some thin CA glue made by Starbond. With the inlay complete, I moved on and drilled out the tuner holes to their final size using a drill bit made for this exact task. The headstock is now complete, and I’m ready to move on to the rest of the neck.
