Router Bit Storage Rack with 3D Printed Inserts

I needed a simple yet secure way to organize and store some router bits. Router bits can be quite expensive so its important to keep them safe. You do not want them rolling around in a drawer where the cutting surface can be damaged.

I started out by modeling some inserts in Fusion 360 and printing them out on my 3D Printer. I designed them to hold both 1/4″ and 1/2″ shank bits. This will make the storage rack a little more versatile because I will not have to worry about where the bits go.

For the base, I found the crustiest scrap of wood I could find. This piece is half broken away so I needed to make a small repair first. I covered some of the cracks with house wrap tape and mixed up some epoxy. I poured the epoxy into the cracks of the wood, and just like every other time I’ve tried something like this, the epoxy leaked all over my table. Eventually, the cracks were filled though and I could move on after cleaning up a mess of spilled epoxy. Once the epoxy was cured, I used the techniques in THIS VIDEO to flatten it out and clean up the excess.

Once flattened, I spent some time trying to clean up the live edge. I wanted to retain that cool live edge so I had to carefully get the epoxy off of it. This took a while but I eventually got most of it off. I gave the whole piece a good sanding before drilling a bunch of 5/8″ holes that would accept the inserts. I decided to drill them in a random pattern but you could arrange these any way you like. I applied a couple coats of homemade finish to the piece. This really brought out the colors of the epoxy.

All thats left to do is install the inserts. These just tap into place. I decided at the last minute to make some quick keyhole hangers that would get inserted into some 3/4″ holes in the back. These would give me a good way to hang the piece without drilling screw holes on the front. The rack is now complete.
